Lost Snowmobiler Search & Rescue

Monte Cristo, Feb. 20, 1999

On February 18th a snowmobiler was lost near Monte Cristo peak in Northern Utah. The combined actions of the Winter Rescue Team and helicopter support from LifeFlight and the Salt Lake County Sheriff's SAR chopper located the missing man after he spent 2 cold nights in blizzard conditions. Due to clear thinking by the lost individual (he dug a snow cave and stayed put) he was rescued in good condition with only minor frostbite that should heal completely. The Mountain Rescue Unit and the Jeep Patrol provided support during the operation and probably would have found the patient had the weather not allowed a helicopter support. (Our planned search path went right to the location where the patient was found.)

The images below were taken by Weber County Sheriff's Search and Rescue photographer, Sheri Barton Trbovich. Click on the thumbnail images to download a higher resolution image. With apologies to the Winter Rescue Team, they did most of the work and have very few photos here, these photos came from our team and show what we did as a unit.
